5 Nearby Islands You Can Visit Without an US Passport

If you are planning a long-awaited getaway, but don’t have your passport yet, keep reading for the places you can go as soon as this month!


1. United States Virgin Islands

Consisting of 3 islands — St. John, St. Croix, and St. Thomas — the Virgin Islands are right next to Puerto Rico and welcome millions of travelers every year. US Virgin Islands is only about a three and a half hour nonstop flight from Atlanta and is sure to provide the perfect view of bright skies, bright blue waters, and pure relaxation.


As of January 3, 2022, the current requirements to enter the United States Virgin Island have been updated that negative COVID tests within 3 days prior to the date of travel for both vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers. Also, a Travel Screening Portal must be submitted to be permitted to enter the USVI.

2. Puerto Rico


Puerto Rico is a bright island with a beautiful landscape of mountains, tropical rainforests, and breathtaking waterfalls. With its rich history, Puerto Rico provides a dynamic combination of rich Spanish Caribbean culture and history. Puerto Rico is the perfect place to find an Air BnB rental, a small boutique hotel, or a hostel to gain a more personalized relaxation experience. There are tons of restaurants in Condado (which is in San Juan) to try, and of course, you must visit Old San Juan to capture those social media-worthy photos!


All individuals traveling to Puerto Rico must complete a Travel Declaration which can be found at https://1link.travelsafe.pr.gov and provide a negative molecular or antigen test with 48 hours of arriving on the island of Puerto Rico, both if you are unvaccinated or vaccinated.



3. Guam

Known for its crystal clear beach waters and white sand, Guam has a small population of only 163,000 and is nicknamed the Island of Warriors. Guam is the perfect destination for anyone looking to get away from crowded cities, including families, honeymooners, and divers! There are outstanding hotels, tax-free shopping, and tons of outdoor and water activities sure to provide the perfect getaway.


Guam has implemented a mandatory 10-day quarantine for all travel unless you are able to provide verification of a Full Vaccination status, a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival to Guam, or a negative antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure.

4. Northern Mariana Islands


With only 55,000 people inhabiting the island, Northern Mariana Islands is home to breathless scenery including mountains, cliffs, caves, bays, and even volcanoes. With remote working becoming increasingly more available, this island would be perfect to travel or reside as US citizens are able to live and work there without the requirement of a visa!

5. American Samoa


If you love underwater activities and reef exploration, American Samoa is the place to visit. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and lies between Hawaii and New Zealand. Snorkeling and even hiking can be done at the National Park of American Samoa or Ofu beach! Most Samoans are bilingual, speaking both Samao and English, so that may provide a relief, but do not forget to immerse yourself within the culture and ask the locals the best coffee shops, markets, and activities!
